Karate News is bringing you an exclusive interview with the greatest star in the world of karate – Rafael Aghayev! Called a “Brilliant of the world karate” by the President of the World Karate Federation Antonio Espinos.
Rafael Aghayev is 8-time European and 4-time World Senior Karate Champion!
How do you feel after the Azerbaijan male kumite team won the most prestigious title at the Euro Championship? Are you sorry that you didn’t participate?
I am very happy for our team, and I congratulate the guys on the victory. We have not won the male team kumite for 20 years. The last 3 years we have reached the final but lost, 2 times we lost to the Turkish national team, 1 time to the Russian team. Of course I wanted to be with my team at this important moment because we are like a family.
What do you like most about karate and what has kept you in this sport for all these years?
Karate for me – it’s a path that I walk all my life, tempering my body, strengthening my spirit. I have an opportunity to open up new skills pushing the limits of my ability. I just love Karate, it’s everything to me!
Is there anything you would change?
Now according to the rules of WKF kumite participants are required to wear a body shield. I would like to be able to go without it, because it’s uncomfortable for me personally. I would also like to add 2-3 more rounds and a little bit contact in kumite without chukoku.
What does your ordinary day look like? How many hours a day do you dedicate to karate?
Almost all my free time is dedicated to training. After recent injuries I spent a lot of time on recovery. Now I’m fine and I can train every day to prepare well for the upcoming World Championships.
Is it possible to make a living from karate?
Not for me. It’s my life!
What is your favourite medal?
I have no favorite medal. I love them all. Because I am working a lot to get it.
What is your next goal?
I want to become a five-time World Champion and to win the European Olympic Games which will be held in Baku next year.
Do you have any idol in life? Who and why?
I do not have an idol and I never had. But I am familiar with and respect each outstanding karateka.
What is the secret of your success?
That’s my secret!
